Talking To Tolula

We caught up with Tolula, the gorgeous artist who is a muse of Vivienne Westwood, has been snapped by Rankin and has acted in a film with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson to discuss some of her amazing experiences.

So Tolula you are a model, DJ and actress, when are you happiest?
So actually I am a Model and Actress, who enjoys music and DJs now and then. There's a difference, because Fat Boy Slim is a DJ, I am a music enthusiast to be precise. I am a different kind of artist - I have had a performance background in dance and drama from a young age, I studied Ballet, Tap and Contemporary dance and performed Shakespeare. My Dad had an amazing record collection that we used to listen to on an old record player, so I have a broad taste in music and I love discovering new songs and love to dance, which is why I enjoy DJing. But performance is my first love, which encompasses many different things.

What was it like working with Vivienne Westwood?
Vivienne Westwood is another different sort of artist. She's such a prolific, unique, visionary. Who's not afraid to say what others are afraid to do and say. She's more than just a fashion designer. Working with her is an immensely inspiring experience. When I recently walked in her show in November 2009 for Selfridges - she had Dionne Bromfield performing before we came out. I had a little paper princess tiara and a sign round my neck warning us humans of Global Warming. Another model's sign had exerts from her political manifesto.... she is the only designer who dares to make such political, environmental and humanitarian comments. I only think of John Galliano and the late and great McQueen who can match up to her maverick originality.

What was it like working with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson in the film Last Chance Harvey?
Working with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, was an incredible introduction to the world of film for me as a young actress. Last Chance Harvey, is my first feature film role and during the production every morning I'd wake up and just think WOW. They were both so encouraging, funny, professional, sweet, amazingly talented...It was truly fabulous to be able to watch them perform every day, Dustin with his humour and practical jokes and Emma's encouraging, intelligent, generous spirit.

What are your favourite tunes to be spinning on the decks?
I tend to listen to a broad range of genres of music. I think people are surprised by what they think they'll like and what they didn't think they'd actually dance to. I play a lot of Prince and Bowie. But I could throw on some Little Richard, Patti Smith, Northern Soul, Nina Simone, thrown in between Rhianna and vintage Madonna. I also love film soundtracks, from films such as Mulholland Drive or LA confidential - Kay Starr. I always play a song from a film.

Where do you hang out in London?
I don't usually go to bars or clubs, but if I want to dance I go to Bungalow 8, they have some of the best DJs play there. But you can also chill and have a conversation upstairs. I love the chilled and friendly atmosphere of the Ivy Club, also the cocktails and food. Since spending some time in LA, I fell in Love with the 24 hour Dinner culture. I love the decadent feeling of sitting round a table with friends, good people, good conversation and good food at 3am, anything could happen and you meet interesting people. Especially if you've been filming or working late. I love late night restaurants in Chinatown and Soho. I love parks, I used to rehearse my theatre company plays in Hyde park, when it didn't rain. I love old theatres and churches, my dream is to perform a play in a church, but it's costly and acoustics aren't great.

Why do you love your Idol eye-let biker jacket....So much?
I love the IDOL eye-let biker jacket because it's a great fit and looks like vintage leather. Like James Dean wore it in Rebel Without A Cause.

Best career moment so far?
Best career moment(s) so far would be filming Last Chance Harvey with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. And shooting the campaign with Vivienne Westwood and walking in all her shows.

What's to come.....?
I am working on a short film about the internet, working on a feature film set in the fashion industry and a play! Also working on a personal project - design collaboration.

Lady Gaga & Beyonce = Heavy

Revolver, Lady Gaga’s video for Telephone looks likely to become the most-watched music video of all time. In the first five days of its release there were around 18 million viewings of the nine- and-half minute short. Telephone kind of reminds us of Thriller – an era defining audio and visual moment. We are waiting in anticipation for the next parade in the GaGa camp!!

Rob Downes | Graphic Detail

We caught up with Rob Downes who is our main graphics guy here at Idol. He is responsible for all the weird and wonderful iconic graphics on all our Idol pieces. Rob is always spotted out and about at a fine soiree and always has something interesting to say and wear. (He will be going red now!) Look at him here pulling a silly move and again with his gorgeous girlfriend Wei.....we wanna know just what makes him tick??

Name some of your Idol's dead or alive?
My Idols are Slash and Axl from Guns N' Roses, Van Halen ( he is a guitar God)

What inspires your graphics?
My graphics are mostly inspired by music, and also from books.. I love learning new techniques from other artists old and new. I also just draw inspiration and ideas from day to day life. Every time I leave my house in the East End I see something new and interesting. Just yesterday some guys had turned my roof into a tropical paradise installation... there is always something going on.

What's on your ipod in the studio?
On my i tunes at the moment is Faith No More, The Melvins, Bleach by Nirvana. I have also been listening to a lot of folk and blues.

Who is you ideal celebrity to wear Idol?

Beyonce was amazing, seeing her already in the magazines wearing Idol was great. I would like to go back in time to 1985 and see Kelly LeBrock, from the film Weird Science, wearing Idol. She was hot!!

What's for lunch?
One egg and one evil claw.

Who's at work with you?
No one is at work with me... I am all alone. Sometimes I talk to myself or talk to the TV.

Neat freak or a bit messy?
A bit of both really.. when I'm working and doing illustrations it can get a bit messy until it all gets a bit much i have to really tidy up.. and then i start scrubbing everything.

Where to hang out?
Mostly around the Bars in the East Of London,.. I sometimes Stray to China Town for food.

How many hours of sleep do you run on?
There is no such thing as sleep.. just coffee!!

What can we expect for forthcoming collections graphics?
There will be exploration into the early Punk scene and more retrospective rock based imagery from the music archives

Le Book NYC 2010

Le Book is a fantastic tool for the fashion industry and a wonderful collectible art form in it’s own right. For this year the New York edition tapped into the work of the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe for their covers, the shots are really graphic and stark. The book also features work by YSL, Stephen Sprouse and Alaia, which we love! You can buy this fab new issue on-line.

Hot Celebrity Couples

We are riveted by the blossoming relationships of celebrity couples and boy there’s some fine love flourishing right now! At the weekend the paparazzi snapped JLS star Marvin Humes and The Saturday’s singer Rochelle Wiseman at The Ivy restaurant and we will certainly be watching them make sweet music. Also Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart ended months of rumours on the 1st March premiere of his new movie, Remember Me by showing they are very much a couple on the red carpet.

Although it’s not hot off the press we still can’t get enough of Slumdog Millionaire stars Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto who first made their couple debut at London’s ever-so romantic Somerset House last year, ahh!! We do hope all this love ends in an engagement like funny man Russell Brand and singer Katy Perry. Recently she told BBC Radio’s 1’s Newsbeat: "The wonderful thing is we both have our own kind of separate talents, careers and lives and we really respect each other”. We think this statement reveals just why we revere these celeb couples so much as individually they are unique, beautiful and talented, not a gold-digger or WAG in sight. Not forgetting sexy down Beyonce and Jay Z who make marriage look like so much fun and prove that business can sometimes be mixed very well with pleasure!
